ACLU v. Long Branch

The American Civil Liberties Union, in what may be the first Federal lawsuit of its kind, asked a judge yesterday to bar the city of Long Branch from helping to create a symbolic Orthodox Jewish religious district.

Judge Anne Thompson of Federal District Court here denied the A.C.L.U.’s request for a temporary restraining order against the city. However, she scheduled a full hearing June 22, directing the city to show why its actions were not unconstitutional.

The issue involves an attempt by the Congregation Brothers of Israel to string a thin wire along dozens of poles to create an eruv, a symbolic extension of the Jewish home.
